RACE SUMMARY

We arrived at Hillsdale ready to run at 1:50 and 2:20 respectively... we checked in and all was well. I was originally seeded into a Friday night race, but I couldn't make it to Hillsdale, so they let me into the fastest heat on Saturday which was great.

So, Lisa took off on her warmup, anticipating the 1:50 race time and I went down to the track to settle in and put my shoes on. As soon as I arrived, the women's 1500m, first heat, was off and running... they modified the meet to a "rolling schedule" mid-day and we were not aware of this... Lisa missed her heat. I scrambled to find her on her warmup, and finally upon her arrival we went to the officials tent and remedied the situation as best we could... she would run in the 3rd heat... with little competition... better than not running at all, but would have been nice to run with the fast field in the first heat.

CLAY'S RACE

I stepped to the line in the second row, 22 people in the heat. I lined up behind one of Hillsdale's best guys so I could get out fast, and it worked fairly well. I was in the mid-lead pack rounding the first bend. I was stuck in lane 2 with a solid, thick pack to the inside, no way to get in lane 1... this continued for about 900m. Anyways, 64 at the 400m, 2:08 at the 800m... PERFECT!!! I came across the 1100m mark around 2:53 (0:45 for 300m, 800-1100). The race REALLY picked up at the 800m mark, the third 400 was very quick... the race was really taking off and I was in the perfect spot, inside lane 2... yes, I ran most of the race in lane 2... my goal was to focus on the lead and the win and it was the only way to go, I had to run in lane 2. I ran about 63 for the final 400m, finishing 3rd or 4th in the heat... (2 Notre Dame guys and one other guy may have gotten me in the end, not sure, it was a blur) and crossed the line at 3:56.52!!! New PR!!!

LISA'S RACE

Lisa was flustered by the whole "rolling schedule" debacle, but she was ready to run... gun shot... 33 seconds at the 200... woah Lis! She started in Lane X on the outside... literally holding onto the fence, off the track... so she bolted to the curve to establish position. 71 at the quarter... her fastest first quarter to date. She led the field by 4-5 seconds, no one would ever get in touch with her the entire time. 2:29 at the 800m mark (71, 78)... Exactly where we had hoped she would be... but a 75, 74 would have been preferable. She hit the 1100m mark at 3:27 (0:58 for 300m , 800-1100)... She ran 78 for her final 400... she went out too fast and held on to a strong pace, but next time she'll shoot for a controlled 200-400 and holding that pace with an even faster finish. She looked strong and finished extremely well, just no one to push her at all... she led wire to wire and ran a 4:46.33 PR on her own. Very impressive.
