SUMMARY

Weather: 40 degrees, Rain, Slight to medium wind

We arrived at the track at 10am, the temperature was about 50 degrees and there was a sprinkling rain... we checked in, went back to the car to organize our race gear... the rain really started to fall... by 10:45, when Lisa started her warmup, the temperature was falling steadily and the rain was intensifying... I started my warmup at 10:55. The warmup was good, the timing of the warmup was good, but we both felt freezing cold heading into the race. We ran our races, then they canceled the meet due to the weather.

LISA'S SUMMARY

Lisa's race started at 11:20-ish.

CLAY'S SUMMARY

My race started at 11:30-ish. I felt ready to go. I was in the third position, inside lane 2. The gun sounded and the back stretch was fast, the crowd started to crash in from the right and a Winthrop runner yelled to his teammates to move up fast... I knew the Winthrop leader was legit, so I took his command as my own and jumped to an opening on the right and took the lead going into the first turn. The Winthrop runner overtook me at the end of the turn, coming down the home stretch... I knew my move was a bit too fast, too early... could have been more patient but I knew the majority of the competitors did not have fast PRs, so I wanted to be up front... I crossed 400m at 61... perfect... I felt very calm and relaxed, the speed was not hurting me... the leading Winthrop runner kept looking around, turning back and yelling to his teammates... I figured out that he was a pacer... it was fairly annoying, although he was a pacer, I was not aware of this from the start and I had no idea what pace he was supposed to set... I continued in the front of the pack, hit the 800m @ 2:06... ouch... the second lap was a 65... I lost focus due to my confusion about the pacer... I should have heard 2:06 and decided to make a long, hard drive to the finish... instead I just maintained pace, falling to a 68 on the third lap, hitting the 1200 @ 3:11... ouch... a couple runners overtook me with about 500m to go... I should have moved with them, but I figured I could reel them in in the final 300m... I didn't... I ran the final 300m in 47, and didn't gain or lose any ground.

I felt like the first lap was perfect... then when it came time to make decisions, I hesitated... probably due to the fact that I had not raced in more than a month... I lacked the confidence necessary to make bold moves and stick with them. So, on the positive side, I ran a 61 first lap and felt awesome... on the negative, I didn't maintain that pace or push myself hard enough when it counted.
