Lisa and I run the Skeleton Run 5k in Amherst every year. The race brings out some of the best competition in the Cleveland area, and this ear was no exception. We ran very well, we knew we would, and we are very confident in our training at the moment. Lisa took 2nd place in 18:12, earning a $100 cash prize, I took 4th finishing in 16:07.
My goal was tun run within 1 minute of Fred Keiser, a top area runner, maybe THE top area runner. At the mile, I saw him cross at 4:42, I was 5:02, right on pace. The 2nd mile may have been the toughest, slightly hilly, but I passed one runner on one of the hills which really gave me a boost. I came across the 2nd mile marker at 10:16, 5:16 for mile 2, not bad but need to step it up. The runner I passed earlier was on my shoulder, so that kept my head in the game, the 3rd mile was certainly faster than the second. The race finished on a slight downhill heading into a 200+ meter footrace on the track. I felt the other runner on my shoulder, so I started my kick with about 300m to go, when I hit the track, I built into a very strong kick and finished well ahead of him.
Lisa's goal was to stay close to Tara Grusciewicz, another top area runner. Another female ran out a bit fast and gave the girls a scare, but Lisa and Tara ran strong, Tara leaving Lisa near the mile mark... once again, Lisa went out too fast, crossing the mile at 5:33... but she still ran well. She finished strong in 18:12, well ahead of any other female runners, taking a solid 2nd place.
